Why We Made the Switch to a Dye-Free Diet

Earlier this year, I picked up I’ll Start Again Monday by Lysa TerKeurst, thinking it would just be another book about dieting and willpower. But what I found was so much deeper—a call to honor God with how I care for my body. It planted a seed in my heart to make healthier choices, but little did I know that God had more in store for our family’s wellness journey.

A few weeks later, I stumbled across a Facebook post that completely changed my perspective. It detailed the harmful effects of artificial dyes on our health—from behavioral issues in children to potential long-term health risks. As a mom, that hit hard. I did some digging, and the more I learned, the more convicted I felt. It wasn’t just about me anymore; it was about my entire family.

Then, I discovered a new documentary called To Dye For, which dives deep into the dangers of artificial dyes in our food. Watching it was eye-opening, to say the least. I knew at that moment that this wasn’t just a fleeting thought—it was a necessary change. God calls us to be stewards of the bodies He’s given us. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” This verse became our family’s guiding light to embracing our new dye-free diet.

Why a Dye-Free Diet?

Artificial dyes are everywhere—in snacks, drinks, cereals, and even “healthy” foods that are marketed to kids. These dyes are linked to a range of health issues, including hyperactivity, allergies, and even certain types of cancer. After realizing how pervasive they were in our diet, we couldn’t ignore them any longer.

But beyond the health facts, this decision felt deeply spiritual. Romans 12:1 reminds us, “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” Choosing foods that nourish rather than harm is a way of worship, a way to say, “Lord, I’m grateful for this body You’ve given me.”

The Transition: Small Steps, Big Impact

When I first told my family about going dye-free, I expected resistance—especially from the kids. I mean, who doesn’t love colorful candies and bright cereals? But instead of focusing on what we had to give up, we shifted our perspective to all the new, exciting foods we could explore.

We started small. First, we tackled snacks. I replaced artificially colored gummies and chips with healthier, dye-free options. Surprisingly, the kids were more open to the change than I anticipated. They loved the new snacks, and I felt peace knowing they were eating foods that honored their bodies.

Next, we moved on to meal planning. I became intentional about reading labels and choosing whole, natural foods. It wasn’t always easy—sometimes convenience foods sneak in dyes where you least expect them—but with practice, it is becoming second nature.

The Results: More Than Just Physical Health

The changes weren’t just physical. Yes, we noticed improvements in energy levels and mood with our new dye-free diet, especially in the kids. But there was also a deeper sense of alignment with God’s design for our lives. As a family, we began to see food not just as fuel, but as a gift from God—a way to nourish our bodies and honor Him.

Psalm 139:14 says, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Choosing dye-free foods became a daily reminder of how wonderfully God made us, and how important it is to care for His creation.

Tips for Switching to a Dye-Free Diet as a Family

  1. Start with Education: Watch documentaries like To Dye For and read up on the effects of artificial dyes. Knowledge is empowering, and understanding the “why” makes the “how” easier.
  2. Read Labels Religiously: Dyes hide in unexpected places—from yogurt to salad dressings. Get familiar with names like Red 40, Yellow 5, and Blue 1.
  3. Find Alternatives: Surprisingly, there are plenty of dye-free snacks and foods available. I’m sure you even have some options in your pantry already.
  4. Involve the Kids: Let them pick out new snacks at the grocery store or help in the kitchen. They’re more likely to embrace the changes when they feel part of the process.
  5. Give Yourself Grace: Following a dye-free diet is a journey, not a sprint. There will be slip-ups, and that’s okay. What matters is the heart behind the decision—to honor God with your body.

Final Thoughts: Honoring God Through Health

Embracing a dye-free diet has been more than just a health choice; it’s been a spiritual journey. It’s about aligning our daily habits with God’s calling to care for our bodies. It’s about teaching our kids the importance of stewardship and gratitude for the health God has given us.

If you’re considering switching to a dye-free diet, I encourage you to pray about it. Ask God for guidance and strength. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Trust that He will lead you and your family on the path to better health—both physically and spiritually.

This dye-free diet journey is just beginning, and I’m excited to walk it out with you, Sis!
