Imagine having to create a homeschool curriculum and environment overnight while also working full-time to ensure your child is fully prepared to enter pre-Kindergarten. That’s exactly what happened to me in 2020, as well as to many other families. During my research, I stumbled upon the idea of Montessori learning and creative play. I was intrigued to discover the many benefits of wooden toys for kids and how they help push your imagination and inspire creativity.
Coco Village is one of the first shops I found, and I started investing in adding open-ended toys to our home immediately. I absolutely love this small shop and their products are of such great quality. I’ve included some of our favorites from Coco Village down below, but before we get into the fun stuff, I want to share with you the many advantages of allowing your children to play with wooden toys.

6 Benefits of Wooden Toys for Kids
Enhances early education
Most wooden toys come in the form of puzzles or blocks, which encourages kids to be creative. Stacking blocks help with the development of fine motor skills and talking about their creations helps expand their vocabulary. Wooden toys also help kids learn about shapes, colors, sizes, and textures from an early age.
Encourages imaginative play
Children learn and express themselves through play. Just like wooden toys help to enhance early education, they also inspire kids to be creative and use their imagination. Plastic toys oftentimes make sounds and move on their own. Children are forced to create their own sound effects and movements while playing with wooden toys. Just think about how much fun kids have while playing with leaves and sticks they’ve found outside.
Those who don’t think outside the box are easily contained.

Better for the environment
Choosing wooden toys over plastic ones helps decrease your carbon footprint. You can do your part without having to do too much at all. According to Our World Data, the world now produces more than 380 million tonnes of plastic every year, which could end up as pollutants, entering our natural environment and oceans. Wood is not only sustainable, but it’s also recyclable and biodegradable. If any wood toys ever end up in a landfill, they will break down and cause no harm to the earth or the ocean.
Safer for children
The first thing I think of when buying a new toy for my little ones is whether or not it’s safe for them. If a toy has a small part, it may be a choking hazard for the baby. If a plastic toy breaks, it may cause some type of bodily injury. Wooden toys on the other hand are well made and very rarely if at all, easily be broken. They are also typically made using organic, non-toxic materials and are perfectly safe for babies that enjoy putting everything in their mouths.
Lasts longer
Wooden toys are so durable and pretty much unbreakable since they are made of good wood materials. They are heirlooms and can be passed down from generation to generation. Their basic learning abilities and classic look make them timeless and great for children of all ages. They might be a bit pricey upfront, but you’ll save so much money over the years since you won’t have to buy any replacement toys.
Simple is best
Plastic toys can be overstimulating for some children from loud noises to excessive movements. Plus anyone with children can attest that when you have young children, your living room will be filled with toys almost daily. Plastic toys can be an eyesore and painful if you happen to accidentally step on a piece. Wooden toys are much more pleasing to the eye and can be easily modified to suit the age and interest of the child.
